Kota Kinabalu: The Sabah Under-21 squad managed to grind out a slim 1-0 win over Armed Forces in their Group A President Cup match at the Likas Stadium on Monday. It was their first home match of the season and despite their dominance, they were unable to find the net in open play.

The only goal of the match was from the spot through Arius Dius Jais after one of the Armed Forces players was penalised for hand ball inside the box deep into injury time in the first half.

Finishing was the main problem for the home team. They had numerous chances to score but their attempts were either off target or too close to the keeper that allowed him an easy save.

Team manager Yassin Aman admitted the team needs to improve on their scoring instinct.

"I was a little disappointed with the slim win. I had expected more goals in this match as we were playing a bottom team but unfortunately the players were unable to find the net apart from the goal from Arius.

"We need to improve in that department but overall I must say I am happy with the three points we earned today and that we remained at the top of the table standing," he said after the match.

The team has 12 points from five matches with four wins and one loss.

He added the coaches will continue to use some of the back-up players in the coming matches to prepare for the long season ahead. The team will next play Selangor United FC here at the Likas Stadium on Thursday at 4.15pm. - GL Oh
