Be careful when hiring workers, GLCs told

Tawau: Government-linked companies (GLCs) are told to be careful when appointing contractors as there are some who employed troubled workers – those involved in drugs and no documents.Merotai Assemblyman Datuk Pang Yuk Ming said the matter should be taken seriously to avoid greater crime due to drug abuse.He made the call following the detention of three contractual employees of Telekom Malaysia Berhad (TM) last month who tested positive for drugs. ADVERTISEMENT According to him, TM needs to review the matter in order not to misrepresent the situation regarding the hiring of contractors or workers, particularly drug abuse in a working environment.He said the employment of drug-related workers will have a major impact on the company and the community as the matter is subject to various other criminal acts. At the same time, Pang, who is also Assistant Minister of Tourism, Culture and Environment, praised the Tawau police efforts in dealing with the crime index in the district, including drug cases."We are very concerned about the issue of hiring drug workers because if it is not addressed immediately, its impact will be worse," he said.Meanwhile, Tawau District Police Chief ACP Fadil Marsus confirmed the detention of three TM contract employees who tested positive for methamphetamine and were investigated under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.
