Loo splashes to 11 gold medals

Kota Kinabalu: Ten-year-old Loo Yie Bing was the toast of Sabah team in the 54th Malaysia Invitational Age Group Swimming Championship (MIAG) held on March 15-18 at the National Aquatic Centre, KLSC Bukit Jalil.The team finished third overall behind champions Selangor and Kuala Lumpur with 11 gold, three silver and 15 bronze medals with Loo delivering 10 individual gold in the 100m freestyle, 200m individual medley, 50m butterfly, 100m butterfly, 50m breaststroke, 100m backstroke, 50m freestyle, 200m freestyle, 100m breaststroke and 50m backstroke.

She also won gold and silver with teammates Beverly Lai Mei Xi, Sharon Voon Xue Ru, Annabelle Frederic and Denise Koshy in 4x100m and 4x50m free style relays respectively, as well as breaking two new meet records in the 100m freestyle (1.03.84s) and in 50m freestyle (29.73s).

Other individual medal winners were 10-year-old Beverly Lai Mei Xi with silver in 50m butterfly and three bronze in 100m freestyle, 100m butterfly and 50m freestyle.

Nineteen-year-old Hollymax Bell captured two bronzes in 200m backstroke, 100m backstroke and 50m backstroke.

Twelve-year-old Jay Lo Vui Seng won two bronzes in 50m breaststroke and 100m breaststroke, and 10-year-old Shane Chong Kian Heuang also won two bronzes in 200m individual medley and 50m backstroke.

Those who delivered one medal were 12-year-old Loo Yie Cheng who won silver in 200m freestyle, 10-year-old Eddie Law Li Hui with bronze in 100m breast stroke; 11-year-old Samuel Ng Chong Cheng with bronze in 200m individual medley; 12-year-old Chu Xin Ying, bronze in 800m freestyle and 18-year-old Lo Meng Sum , bronze in 400m freestyle.

The team also won bronze in the 11-12-year-old girls age group 4x100m freestyle relay with Yong Xin Ru, Sharifah Destinee, Bellina Mei Saario and Chu Xin Ying.

President of Sabah Aquatic Sports Association (Sasa), Anthony Kiob was pleased with the improved performance and achievement.

"We have won five more medals than last year and the result showed that the swimmers and coaches are truly committed and worked together to build a strong team for the state.

"Sabah swimmers are progressing well under the good leadership of our coaches, and more importantly I can see that the swimmers are mentally prepared to accept new challenge in near future."

Anthony also praised the 17 swimmers who have been recognised by Amateur Swimming Union of Malaysia (Asum) in their latest Malaysia Swimming All Star program with the objective to recognise and give encouragement to high achieving junior swimmers.

Those awarded are Yipp Chi Tong, Samuel Ng Chong Cheng, Sharifah Destinee Dickerson, Adrian Frederic, Wong Hsiao Thang, Janetty John, Cheng Ka Man, Shane Chong Kian Heuang, Eddie Law Li Hui, Beverly Lai Mei Xi, Jay Lo Vui Seng, Chu Xin Ying, Yong Xin Ru, Shawn Voon Xuan Qing, Loo Yie Bing, Loo Yie Cheng and Yong Zi Yi.

"I hope the recognition will spur them to train even harder," he said.

The 49-member contingent was led by team manager cum coach Sanctuson Gan with head coach Benjamin Lee assisted by Tie Mee Kiong with Sabah Sports Council (MSN) coach, Sean Goh also on board.

Meanwhile, Sasa thanked Asum for the opportunity given to Daniel Lee as one of the technical officials in the championship and they will continue to send representative to national meet so that the State swimming technical standard can continue to improve.
