Indonesian jailed, fined for offering bribe to policeman

Kota Kinabalu: A 39-year-old Indonesian was jailed 10 days and fined RM10,000 in default a month's jail for offering RM500 bribe to a policeman.Sessions Court Judge Abu Bakar Manat handed the sentence to Chass Diaz after he pleaded guilty to charge, Thursday.Chass tried to offer the money to Corporal Masrin Sundang as inducement to release Chass' friend Jhon Kebesa Raya who was detained for not having valid identification document.ADVERTISEMENT The offence took place between noon and 2pm on March 14, 2018 at the Motorcycle Patrol Unit office of the Penampang police station.The offence under Section 17(b) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Act 1997 carries a jail term of up to 20 years, and a fine five times the amount involved or RM10,000, whichever is higher.During mitigation, Chass who was not represented, asked for a light sentence saying that he has two children, a wife and a mother to look after. He told the court that his wife is currently sick and could not work.ADVERTISEMENT Chass who had been in the State for 24 years, said he did not know the law and promised not to commit any offence in future. However, Deputy Public Prosecutor Rozanna Abd Hadi from MACC urged the court to impose a deterrent sentence on the grounds that such case was rampant nowadays.

She submitted that the court should consider public interest in meting out the sentence on Chass and the sentence imposed should be a lesson to Chass and deter other would-be offenders. – Cynthia D Baga
