Two girls drown in P'pang river

Kota Kinabalu: The bodies of two 15-year-old girls, believed to have drowned, were found in a river in Kg Kibunut, Penampang, Friday.Identified only as Dinda and Paulina, the two were believed to have fallen into the river as they were conducting leisure activity at the recreation area with three other friends. Penampang Police Chief DSP Mohd Haris Ibrahim said the five went to the area at about 12.20pm and the victims were discovered missing by one of their friends at about 1.50pm, prompting a search for them to no avail.

He said preliminary investigations showed the two, who did not know how to swim, slipped and fell into the river before being swept away by currents. "There was no guardian at the time of the incident as the recreation area only operates on weekends," he said, Friday.A team of 11 firefighters were rushed to the scene, 17km away, upon receiving a distress call at 1.50pm, led by operations officer John Radsung, with one fire engine and three utility vehicles.A villager, Calvin Dekui, 51, said he discovered the victims seven metres from the place where they were reported to have fallen around 3.13pm and alerted the firefighters before the bodies were retrieved.

The operation concluded at 3.35pm.Meanwhile, in LABUAN, the body of a woman, believed to be in her 20s, was found in a drain at Jalan Tun Mustapha, Friday.
