PH won't harm ties with China, says Kit Siang

PETALING JAYA: Pakatan Harapan (PH) will not harm bilateral ties with China if it wins federal power in GE14, DAP leader Lim Kit Siang said Saturday.Instead, the pact comprising DAP, PKR, Parti Amanah Negara and Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia will uphold the existing good relations in the best interests of both nations.

The incumbent Gelang Patah MP said it was DAP that had called for a normalisation of ties between the communist republic and Malaysia in the 1960s and 1970s and criticised what he described as selective use of the recently passed and gazetted Anti-Fake News Act.

"One such lie is a Pakatan Harapan Federal Government in Putrajaya will destroy Malaysia-China relations, when DAP had called for the diplomatic recognition of China long before these events took place.

"In less than three weeks' time, lies, fake news and false propaganda have increased by leaps and bounds, fully justifying the warning of critics of the Anti-Fake News Act inside and outside the country," he said in a statement.

"I met a foremost Malaysian diplomat recently, Dennis Ignatius, whose 36-year diplomatic service in the country included stints Beijing.

"Dennis told me that anyone who accused Mahathir of being anti-China is simply ignorant of history, as Mahathir was the one who really opened up Malaysia-China relations with his groundbreaking visit and discussions with Deng Xiaoping in 1985," Lim said.

He said Malaysia's warm ties with the Asian superpower today is due "in no small part due to Mahathir's farsightedness and courage" because the latter had worked hard to involve China in regional economic and security infrastructure through the East Asia Economic Caucus and Asean.
