12-gold haul by Sabah athletes

Kota Kinabalu: It was a fruitful outing for the Sabah Sukma athletes at the Sarawak Athletics Open Championship held over the weekend at the State Stadium in Petra Jaya, Kuching.The State contingent with five officials and 24 athletes returned with 12 gold, nine silver and four bronze medals in the two-day competition.

Long jumper Andre Anura @ Anuar also smashed the games record with a leap of 7.35m to take the gold.

The other gold medal winners were Marlin Hing William (women 1500m - 1:23.63); Jomon Papau (men 1500m - 4:15.27); Mohammad Eizlan Dahalan (men high jump - 2.07m); Benedict Ian Gawok (men 110m hurdles - 14.35 PB); Nur Aishah Aling (women 100m - 12.39 PB); Shahrimien Saimoh (men 400m - 48.29 PB); Marlin Hing William (5000m - 21:34.82; Mohd Alif Mohd Razi (javelin - 54.58m); Nur Aishah Aling (women 200m - 25.52); Raymond Yew (men 800m - 1:58.38) and the men 4x400m relay team (3:21.27).

The silver medals were won by Maslan Mosirin (men high jump - 2.00m); Karmentina Nadia (women 100m hurdles - 16:26); Chelsea Cassiopea (women 100m - 12.39 PB); R. Darren Harry (men 100m - 10.97 PB); Riksi Tahir (men 400m - 49.19 PB); Zulkifli Saidin (shot put - 13.72 PB); Beckham Buing (men javelin - 50.85m); Chelsea Cassiopea (women 200m - 26.09) and Mohamad Erwan Amir Hamja (men 800m - 2:02.84) while the bronze medals came from Mohamad Erwan Amir Hamja (men 1500m - 4:24.08); Jatifah Gesikin (women 400m - 62.61); Brynoth Alarick Larry (shot put - 13.64) and R. Darren Harry (men 200m - 22.94).

Head coach Dzulfiqar Ag.Anak was pleased with the progress of the athletes ahead of the Perak Sukma Games in September.

"The two-day Sarawak Open championship was an important platform for MSN to monitor the progress of Sabah athletes after the Perak All Comers Championship late last month.

"We are extremely pleased that 10 of the athletes have successfully broken their personal best in the championship. It is a positive development for us with the cooperation of MSN, Sukma coaches and trainers, UMS, ISN and the support of families.

"Hopefully their performance will be improved further for the Perak Games and able to improve their medal haul of five gold, three silver and seven bronze medals achieved in the last Sukma in Kuching," he said. - GL Oh
