Bogus telco plan: Duo charged with cheating

Kota Kinabalu: Two locals were charged in the Magistrate's Court here Tuesday with cheating three people over mobile telecommunication package plan.Businessman Aries Rayan Philip Among, 24, and student Muhd Ashraf Edy Nasrin, 20, claimed trial before Magistrate Cindy Mc Juce Balitus to the three charges.They were accused of cheating one Md Azreel Ameer Arifin by deceiving him to register for a mobile telecommunication package plan at the office of a mobile telecommunications provider in 1Borneo Hypermall at 5pm on Oct 31, 2017, causing Md Azreel to suffer RM862.90 loss.ADVERTISEMENT On the second count, the duo allegedly cheated one Armuazzamsyah Abdul Said over a similar plan, causing him to lose RM1,363.95 at the same place and time.On the third count, Aries and Muhd Ashraf were accused of cheating one Ikhwan Abdul Azis over a similar plan, causing him to lose RM1,392.55 also at the same place and time.Each count under Section 417 of the Penal Code carries a jail term of up to five years or fine or both on conviction.Inspector Albert Basiri, prosecuting proposed bail at RM6,000 on each count.ADVERTISEMENT Aries and Muhd Ashraf, who were not represented, requested for a lower bail amount. The court set May 17 for case management and released Aries and Muhd Ashraf on a bail of RM1,000 in two sureties on each count.

However, the court deferred sentencing on Lubur Melboy Geray to May 17 while waiting for the victim's medical report. Lubur admitted to causing hurt to one Suriah Nordin, 27, at 2.50pm on April 8 at a rented unit of a shophouses at Taman Jumbo in Petagas, Putatan.When asked by the court on why he committed the offence, Lubur, who was not represented, replied that it was because Suriah was being rude to him. Lubur faced a jail term of up to a year or fine or both if convicted under Section 323 of the Penal Code. Pending the date, Lubur was ordered to be remanded. - Jo Ann Mool
