Mat Rempit jailed, fined

Kota Kinabalu: A 20-year-old local who was riding a motorcycle recklessly by performing "Superman style" act was jailed a day and fined RM6,000 or another three months.Muhd Riezal Kamarudin pleaded guilty before Magistrate Stephanie Sherron Abbie to riding a Yamaha 125Z recklessly at 3.30am on Feb 17 this year along the Kota Kinabalu-Papar road, near Taman Jumbo in Petagas.

Traffic prosecuting officer Inspector Hanif Mamyudi told the court that on the said day, police tailed several motorcyclists for doing dangerous acts by performing the "Superman" stunt where their chests were lying flat on the motorcycle seats with their legs stretched backward.

Police later detained a motorcyclist, later identified as Muhd Riezal, during Ops Cegah Samseng Jalanan.

Muhd Riezal of Tawau, who was unrepresented, requested for a lenient sentence saying he had just finished Form Six.

Hanif applied for an appropriate sentence.

Muhd Riezal had committed an offence under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 which carries a jail term of up to five years and fine between RM5,000 and RM15,000 on conviction.

Meanwhile, a 26-year-old assistant store keeper was jailed five months for stealing from her workplace.

Siti Norkhadilah Budi Huseng admitted to stealing 24 packets of chocolate, two bottles of chocolates and a plastic of chewing gum, valued at RM1,575 at the KKC Putatan at 9am on Nov 27, 2017.

Inspector Suzie @ Stephanie Kupit, prosecuting, told the court that Siti was working at the premises owned by Kon Siong Hock about three months prior to the incident.

Investigations revealed that Siti had sold the merchandise.

Her act was caught on CCTV as well as information from other workers.

Siti, who was not represented, requested for leniency, saying that her husband had left her and their three children.

She also said she is currently pregnant.

Suzie applied for an appropriate sentence.

The charge under Section 381 of the Penal Code, carries a jail term of up to seven years and liability of a fine on conviction. - Jo Ann Mool
