12 months for cheating man RM4,500

Kota Kinabalu: A 55-year-old jobless man, who cheated a man of RM4,500 was jailed 12 months and fined RM5,000 or six months jail.Suharno Trio @ Tario pleaded guilty before Magistrate Stephanie Sherron Abbie to committing the offence at 11am on Aug 8, 2017 at The Cruise in Tanjung Aru.

He admitted to cheating Lai Shen Chong by making him to believe that he was an immigration officer who could get a MyKad from the National Registration Department for Lai's friend, Ivy Ng Cheun Fung, causing Lai to give him RM4,500.

Inspector Suzie @ Stephanie Kupit, prosecuting, told the court that on the said day, Lai met a man by the name of one Joniy, regarding the MyKad matter.

Joniy, later identified as Suharno, told Lai that he was an officer working at the Immigration Department here and promised to handle it.

Lai gave him the money as a payment for the service.

However, Suharno could not be contacted since then until a police report was lodged against him.

Meanwhile, the court rejected Suharno's guilty plea on a second count of similar offence.

Suharto claimed that he was only borrowing the money.

He had earlier admitted to cheating Sahirun Pindatun of RM1,200 by making him to believe that he was an Immigration officer and could arrange for the release of one Yusri Rahim.

The offence allegedly took place between March 15 and 17, last yearat Restaurant CFC in Sinsuran.

The court set May 21 for case management.

Each charge under Section 420 of the Penal Code provides for a jail term of between one and 10 years, and whipping and fine, on conviction.

Meanwhile, in TAWAU, a 50-year-old man was fined RM1,500 or one month's jail by the Magistrate Court here, Wednesday, for drink-driving.

Chang Chiu Ket pleaded guilty before Magistrate Herlina Muse to committing the offence at Mile 2, Jalan Apas about 12.40am on March 18.

ASP Nur Intan Jamrin, prosecuting, told the court that Chang was detained during Ops Mabuk.

Chang was found with 101mg alcohol in 100ml of his blood, which is 21mg over the limit.

He was charged under Section 45A (1) of the Road Transport Act which carries fine up to RM8,000 or 12 months jail on conviction. – Lagatah Toyos & Jo Ann Mool
