Tawau: DAP Sabah Advisor cum incumbent Kota Kinabalu MP, Jimmy Wong said the time has come for Telekom Malaysia Bhd (TM) to get its act together to improve service in Sabah, especially High Speed Internet. He said compared to the peninsula, Sabah is paying for a slow-and-unstable Internet service, besides poor penetration even in urban commercial and housing areas.

"There were also complaints of frequent breakdowns of services and unsatisfactory restoration time.

We also understand that other telcos are providing better services at lower prices. It was also evident from the equipment erected in some areas that these telcos are building their networks faster than TM.

It seems that TM is not taking the Sabah market as serious as its competitors and this is rather puzzling for its consumers," he said.

Wong said the recent news report on the arrest of three employees of TM contractors here, in February this year, who were tested positive for drugs, indicated that something was amiss in its operations in Sabah, and that it warrants serious attention from its top management.

The trio were nabbed while working at two separate TM work sites together with five others during Ops Tapis conducted by the district police at Batu Payung on Feb 10.

"It's really mind-boggling that such a detrimental element could seep into its operations.

It certainly does not reflect well on its corporate culture and its Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)," he said.

Noting that the said incident could be just the 'tip of the iceberg' of the ongoing problems plaguing its Sabah operations, Wong cautioned that if left unchecked, it may hasten its decay and eventual demise.

He stressed that as a responsible and a leading government-linked company (GLC), especially a wholly-owned subsidiary of Khazanah Nasional Bhd, which is a sovereign wealth fund of the Government, TM must strive to set a good example for the other GLCs in the country.

"This is because should anything go wrong with the operations, it will not only incur huge losses to the GLC itself, but more importantly the rakyat who are the taxpayers. Government linked companies and state-owned enterprises should be professionally and prudently managed to avoid leakages and wastage of public funds," he added.

He was nonetheless convinced that TM's chief executive officer Datuk Seri Mohammed Shazalli Ramly, who is a highly-acclaimed corporate leader who left his mark in the fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) industry, prior to joining the telecommunication industry, would not allow whatever 'cancerous cells' there are within TM to go unchecked under his watch.

"I sincerely believe Shazalli would not allow any unscrupulous officials and activities within TM to undermine his great legacy as an upright-and-illustrious 'Captain of The Industry'," he said. - Lagatah Toyos
