Bouncer gets death for murder of teenage boy
Kota Kinabalu: A 29-year-old bouncer was sentenced to death by the High Court Thursday for the murder of a teenage boy outside a bar in Asia City, here, two years ago.High Court Judge Datuk Nurchaya Arshad found Mohd Azmin Lidin guilty of the charge, ruling that the prosecution had successfully proven its case beyond reasonable doubt.

Azmin, a local, was convicted of murdering one Yaacob Nasran, 18, between 3.30am and 4.30am on Dec 15, 2016 outside the Siam Thai Bar, Jalan Asia City.

The offence under Section 302 of the Penal Code carries the death penalty on conviction.

Azmin was seen holding his breath on hearing the court's decision and broke down at the gallery after being whisked from the accused dock and was overheard saying, "Bukan saya yang bunuh…kamu salah orang (It was not me who murdered him…you got the wrong person),"

Azmin, when escorted out of the courtroom, told Yaacob's family who waited for him to come out that he did not kill their son.

Azmin was seen crying and smiling at the same time while being led away.

Yaacob's father, Nasran Harun @ Nigel, thanked everyone for their support and kindness in helping them in their "journey of despair".

"Yaacob would have been 20 years old next week on May 25. We cry for the life he did not live.

"A part of the process of justice has been served: If a person who murders an innocent child for absolutely no reason does not hang, it says little of our values for justice and deterrence to protect our children for the future.

"Azmin, your actions in denying our child his life means you have denied yourself the right to nurture and guide your family.

"This verdict does nothing to bring back Yaacob, it is not a victory of any sort to us. We mourn our hero every day," said Nasran.

Azmin had, on Feb 28, testified as a sole witness in his defence and opted to give his evidence under oath.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Gan Peng Kun appeared for the prosecution while Azmin was represented by counsel Dato' Seri Rakhbir Singh.
