A Ramadan to remember for Anwar family

PETALING JAYA: Breaking fast on the first day of Ramadan this year is especially memorable for the family of PKR de facto leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. While it was a hurried affair, it was nonetheless special as the whole family was finally able to sit down and eat a meal to mark the holy month together.

"It was rushed as we had hundreds of others breaking fast with us as my father wanted to relay his full support to the Government and the supporters who have worked so hard.

"He only came in to break fast with his grandchildren – especially Safiyah, who fasted the entire day yesterday," Anwar's eldest daughter and Permatang Pauh MP Nurul Izzah Anwar told Malay Mail. Raja Nur Safiyah, 11, is Izzah's eldest daughter and Anwar's eldest grandchild.

"We were elated, but were looking forward to some quiet family time," Nurul Izzah said.

However, she was quick to add that the family is very thankful to have so many well-wishers and supporters who wanted to share in the thanksgiving with them.

"Without their support, we couldn't even fathom a release with a full pardon based on a miscarriage of justice.

"It is nothing short of a miracle," Nurul Izzah added.

After just minutes with his family, Anwar had to excuse himself to meet about 500 supporters at his residence in Bukit Segambut Dalam Thursday night who were waiting to break their fast with him.

Anwar was released from prison on May 16 after receiving a royal pardon by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Muhammad V.
