Kuala Lumpur: Two friends were each sentenced to four years' jail and three strokes of the rotan, by the Sessions Court here Monday, for robbing a Grabcar driver two months ago.Judge Zamri Bakar meted the sentence on Azirul Samsudin, 22, and Abdul Manap Sabarin, 24, after they changed their plea to guilty to committing gang robbery on Mohd Akmal Hakimi Othman, 28, in front of Jinjang Baru Flat, Sentul here at 3.30am on March 18.

The offence under Section 395 of the Penal Code carries a maximum sentence of 20 years jail and whipping, upon conviction.

The court ordered both men to serve the sentence from the date of arrest on April 29.

Earlier, both men, who were unrepresented, appealed for a lighter sentence as they had a family to support but deputy public prosecutor Noor Jazilah Mohd Yushaa urged for an appropriate sentence to serve as a lesson and in consideration that the case was of public interest.

Based on the facts of the case, the duo booked the Grab service to take them to Jinjang Baru Flat but upon arrival at Brem Mall, the victim realised that the booking was cancelled.

Nevertheless the victim continued with his journey and on arrival at the Jinjang Baru Flat, one of the accused grabbed him by the neck while the other took his Samsung J7 mobile phone and RM100, before both fled and were arrested on April 29.
