Lawyer named Deputy Speaker

Kota Kinabalu: Datuk Ahmad Abdul Rahman Thursday received his instrument of appointment and was sworn in as Deputy Speaker of the Sabah State Legislative Assembly (DUN) at Istana Negeri, here.Ahmad, 68, who had served as an advocate and solicitor in Sabah for more than 30 years, was sworn in before Yang Dipertua Negeri Tun Juhar Mahiruddin and witnessed by Kota Kinabalu High Court Judge Datuk Martin Idang.Also present was the wife of the Yang Dipertua Negeri, Toh Puan Norlidah RM Jasni. ADVERTISEMENT Others present included Sabah Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Seri Madius Tangau and Sabah State Legislative Assembly Speaker Datuk Syed Abas Syed Ali.On May 12, Parti Warisan Sabah (Warisan) President, Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal was sworn in as the 15th Sabah Chief Minister at Istana Negeri.In the 14th General Election, Warisan won 21 State Legislative Assembly seats while Warisan's partners from Pakatan Harapan (PH) namely DAP won six seats and PKR two. However, the number of DUN seats garnered by Warisan and its political colleagues in PH was only 29 in total which was inadequate for the coalition to form the government and thus needed more seats.ADVERTISEMENT Following the move by six BN State Assemblymen to join Warisan, the coalition then had 35 seats which were sufficient to form the government with a simple majority.
