Free telecast shows Pakatan Govt cares: Lafa
Published on: Tuesday, June 19, 2018

Labuan: Labuan Amateur Football Association (Lafa) has given the thumbs-up to the Pakatan Harapan government for its decision to provide free live telecast of the 2018 Fifa World Cup on RTM channels saying that it was a wonderful Hari Raya gift that was never given before under Barisan Nasional (BN).

Lafa Chairman ST Tan said: "The free live telecasts would certainly bring cheers to thousands, particularly those who don't have Astro at home or with Astro subscription but without the sports package.

There would also be no necessity to purchase the World Cup channel at a cost of RM100."

He added that with the free live telecasts, people would not have to look for suitable places to watch the once-in-four-year games.

"They would watch at the convenience of their own home with family members and friends.

"There is tremendous savings for many," he said.

He noted that some of the games were held after midnight, adding that: "Imagine how worrisome would be for the family members if some of them are not back home after midnight."

He further said that watching big games would arouse greater interest in football and sports has a great unifying force.

"When we watch games like this and get interested we forget about race or religion."

On another note, Tan said that the free live telecast was also well-timed as it provided a refreshing break from the daily agenda of political talks with the elections now over.

The telecasts were arranged by the Communications and Multimedia Ministry at a cost of about RM30 million sponsored by several companies. Its minister Gobind Singh Deo is known to be a football fan with Brazil being his favourite team.

The games commenced on June 14 and the finals would be played on July 15 over the period where 64 world-class football would be presented. - Sohan Das
