MAB to increase pool of cleaners
Kota Kinabalu: Malaysia Airports Berhad has decided to increase its pool of cleaners from 38 to 43 while the Immigration Department said it will make available more counters soon to prevent tourist clearance delays within 24 hours of an appeal by Deputy Chief Minister Christina Liew to buck up.MAB Sabah Manager Sunip Naiman (pic) said the focus would also be on international arrivals and departures to ensure visitors are able to use the toilets at the international level, namely Bays 5 and 6.

He also assured of close monitoring by supervisors and terminal operations staff to ensure that the Kota Kinabalu International Airport's toilets are clean at all times.

Sabah Immigration Director Musa Sulaiman thanked Liew, who is also State Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister, for her concern and assured that the department would continue to do their level best.

He admitted that one of three matters faced by them is lack of counters at the arrival hall where currently there are only 10 available.

He said there are plans by MAB to make some changes such as getting hybrid counters which would probably only be done by end of this year.

Musa said the department is also facing a manpower problem which would take some time to address.

"I appreciate the concern shown by the Minister and will alert our superiors on the matter," he said.

Liew had said that inaction on their (MAB and the Immigration Department's) part will be damaging to the State's booming tourism industry that saw half a million visitors last year. She also said although toilets and immigration clearance were not her problem, tourists were having the impression that her Tourism Ministry was at fault.

"Everyone was blaming the Tourism Ministry saying we are not doing their job when it has nothing to do with us," she had said.

"I am not going to start the culture of 'you blame us, we blame you' or 'it is not my job.'

Even though it is not my job, I am going to take it as if it is my job," she said, adding that she would not hesitate to take pictures and videos for the public to see if there is no improvement. - Sherell Jeffrey
