Year's jail for beating up dad

Kota Kinabalu: A 27-year-old man who assaulted his 73-year-old father for not being given money, was sent to prison for 12 months.Ghulam Hassan Alih maintained his guilty plea before Magistrate Stephanie Sherron Abbie to committing the offence.

He had on May 22 admitted to causing hurt to one Alih Karama by hitting him with a plank at 11pm on May 7 in a house at Kg Lok Urai in Gaya island.

Inspector Suzie @ Stephanie Kupit informed the court that the medical report of Alih had been obtained.

Suzie in presenting the facts, informed the court, that on the said day while Alih was in the house with his daughter, Ghulam approached him and asked for money.

Upon being told that he had no money, Ghulam became angry and attacked the father with a plank, leaving him with a swollen cheek and abrasions on his ear.

Alih lodged a report against Ghulam stating that his son frequently assaulted him.

Ghulam, who was not represented, requested for a lenient sentence while Suzie applied an appropriate sentence.

Ghulam was charged under Section 323 of the Penal Code which carries a jail term of up to a year or fine or both if convicted.

Meanwhile, the case of a 48-year-old driver charged with committing mischief will be rementioned on July 9.

Stephanie set the date after granting the prosecution's application for another mention date pending an instruction from the Deputy Public Prosecutor's office on the case.

Anjan Moktar was accused of damaging the window of a house belonging to one Norihan Muluk and caused RM500 loss to the complainant at 10am on May 13 at Kg Tugu Peringatan in Petagas.

The court was told that Norihan had lodged a police report to retract his report against Anjan.

Norihan confirmed it saying that Anjan had apologised to her and promised to pay compensate.

Anjan was released on extended bail pending the date.

In another case, two local men were fined RM3,500 or 12 months jail each for taking drugs.

Yong Chan Lin and Tommy Beritus pleaded guilty to committing the offence here and in Penampang in April and May. - Jo Ann Mool
