Duo held for molesting tourists
Kota Kinabalu: Two men were nabbed by police for allegedly molesting a 27-year-old foreign tourist and her sister, 25, at Pulau Sapi.City Police Chief ACP M. Chandra said the siblings were at the island for swimming and snorkelling when the incident occurred between 1pm and 2pm on June 17.

"The tourist claimed that she and her sister were molested by a boat skipper and his friend as they were learning how to swim. They had barely known the men who transported them to the island via a tourist boat.

"At about 10.50am the next day, a police team apprehended two men at Jesselton Point, believed to be the perpetrators. The suspects, aged 23 and 25, were remanded for four days to facilitate investigations," he said.

The case is investigated under Section 354 of the Penal Code, which carries a jail term up to 10 years or fine or whippings, or either two, on conviction.

Chandra said throughout 2018, police received two reports under the same section regarding foreign tourists being molested by tourist boat operators during leisure activities at resort islands around Kota Kinabalu.

He advised tourist boat operators to monitor and ensure their workers are ethical so that there is no repeat of such incidents, adding that employers also need to make sure that their skippers are Malaysian, properly trained and have valid documents.

"We take such incidents seriously and will take stern action against offenders found to have committed such immoral act," he added. - Jegathisan Sivanesan
