18 Filipinos illegals admit paying agent
Sandakan: A human trafficking syndicate is believed to be smuggling in Filipino migrants following the detention of 18 illegal immigrants by Marine police, here, at two separate locations on June 25. Those detained claimed they paid around 5,000 to 10,000 pesos (RM400 to RM800) each to an agent who had arranged their travel.

Marine Police Regional 4 Commander ACP Mohd Yazib Abd Aziz said all of them also claimed to have entered Malaysia to look for jobs as labourers or in agricultural sectors.

As for the first case, 15 men were detained in the area of Sungai Darling, Mile 10, at around 3am.

They were identified as Hamad Yusuf, 25, Sior, 17, Adarun Antalan, 17, Abdul Tom, 39, Jimal Poting, 16, Almah Otok, 18, Habir Laman, 19, Armal Amas, 10, Andy Han, 17, Markie Empillo, 17, Hashim Hadi, 31, Pindatun Arabil, 56, Mukim Irahan, 23, Ahmad Labian, 17, and six-year-old Ikmal Labian.

As for the second case, three other men were detained in the quarry area of Gum-Gum Kecil, Mile 16, at 6.20am.

The trio were identified as Appak Abdullah, 23, Idris Akbora, 35 and Temhar Jaikal, 22.

All 18 admitted to hailing from Basilan, Philippines, and had travelled to Bakungan Besar Island, Philippines, via a vessel before entering Sandakan using speedboats.

The use of speedboats was banned under the previous government in line with the enhanced security arrangements along the Esszone following kidnappings and other criminal activities. - Winnie Kasmir
