Speedboats collide off Tawau, 5 Indonesians killed
Tawau: Five Indonesians were found dead while one is still missing and 15 others were rescued after a reported collision between two speedboats off Sungai Nyamuk, near the Malaysia-Indonesia border at around 7.30pm, Friday. It was learnt that they were workers (Tenaga Kerja Indonesia – TKI) in Tawau, who were about to head to Sebatik Island, Indonesia, before they collided with another speedboat coming from the same island, about 100 metres away from Sungai Nyamuk.

Indonesian Consulate in Tawau head Sulistijo Djati Ismojo, who confirmed the incident, said the affected comprised 17 adults, two children and two boat crews. He said the rescuees are now in Nunukan and Sebatik in Indonesia.

He added that the Consulate in Tawau is not handling the case directly but is only closely monitoring its development with authorities in Nunukan and Tawau.

Tawau Maritime Zone Chief Captain Maritime Romli Mustafa said the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) and marine police deployed five of their assets to monitor Malaysia waters to look out for the missing victim.

However, he clarified that MMEA is only monitoring the waters as they have not received any requests from the Indonesian authority to assist in their search and rescue mission.

He said they have referred to the Indonesian Consulate in Tawau but no official details have been provided so far. - Lagatah Toyos
