Broker gets 10 years, one stroke

Kota Kinabalu: A 26-year-old man was sentenced to 10 years' jail and ordered given a stroke of the cane for being a middleman in a prostitution activity involving a Thai woman.Rizuan Minggu maintained his plea of guilty before Sessions Court Judge Ainul Shahrin Mohamad when his case was brought up, Wednesday.He acted as middleman for the woman involved in prostitution at 10.45pm on June 8, 2017 at a lobby of a hotel in Bundusan, Penampang.ADVERTISEMENT Rizuan committed the offence together with another accused Hendrie Nordin, who was not present in court.The offence under Section 372(1)(f)/34 of the Penal Code carries a jail term of up to 15 years, and whipping, on conviction.The court issued a warrant of arrest against Hendrie and set July 8 to review the warrant.During mitigation, Rizuan who was not represented, asked for a light sentence saying that he has two children and a mother who is suffering from diabetes, to look after.ADVERTISEMENT However, Deputy Public Prosecutor Wan Farra Farreza urged the court to impose a deterrent sentence on the grounds that the act by Rizuan gave a bad image to the country as well as encourage immoral activity.Meanwhile, three men were fined for drink-driving.
