200 homeless in LD fire, man held

Lahad Datu: At least 200 villagers of Kampung Sarip, near here, were left homeless after fire destroyed their homes early Monday. Lahad Datu Fire and Rescue Station Chief Darren John said 16 firemen were rushed to the scene in three trucks after being summoned at 1.06am and brought the blaze under control an hour later."The fire, which destroyed 30 houses, was put out at 6.01am," he said, adding that no casualties were reported.

The cause of the fire and damage has yet to be ascertained, he told reporters at the scene. Meanwhile, police have detained a 37-year-old foreigner to assist in the investigation into the fire.District Acting Police Chief ASP Mohd Fadzil Ali said the suspect was detained at his burning house following information.He said preliminary investigation showed the suspect set fire to his house after an argument and a fight with his brother over the latter's refusal to give him money to buy drugs.
