Kota Kinabalu: State Minister of Law and Native Affairs Datuk Aidi Moktar said Tan Sri Richard Malanjum should have been appointed the new Chief Justice of Malaysia earlier."Malanjum is qualified and he should have taken over the post much earlier, but due to certain reasons … it is the government prerogative who they want to appoint," he said.

"The time has come for Sabahans to be proud because Malanjum is a Sabahan and was appointed as the country's new Chief Judge. On behalf of Sabahans, we are grateful and thankful to Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad," he said.

Aidi also said the time has come for handling of Islamic marriage courses to be opened to interested agencies and not monopolised by only one agency.

He said Sabah is wide and to have more agencies conducting such courses would be more efficient rather than having just one agency doing so.

"I think it's time for us to open it to interested agencies so they can handle this course well and more efficiently," he said.

Aidi said there is currently only one single agency assisted by religious departments and officials in handling such courses.

"It's time we open it to other agencies to conduct the courses in the east coast, interiors and the northern part of Sabah, every division across the State must have an agency to handle such courses," he said.

He said this will benefit young couples as it gives them more choice saying "If one agency charges too high, they have the choice of going to another agency, and those in Kudat for example, don't have to travel all the way to Kota Kinabalu to take the course."

Also present was Sabah Islamic Religious Council (MUIS) Chairman Datuk Seri Dr Hasbullah Taha and representatives from 14 other agencies including companies. In his inaugural speech as the newly appointed MUIS chairman, Hasbullah thanked all invited agencies who took time to attend the ceremony.

He hoped for continuous support and cooperation in further uplifting Islam in the State. - Sherell Jeffrey
