Guard gets nine years, rotan for robbing tourist from Russia

Kota Kinabalu: A 26-year-old security guard was jailed nine years and ordered given a stroke of the cane for robbing a Russian tourist.Sessions Court Judge Ainul Shahrin Mohamad handed the sentence to Muhammad Ali Edi who pleaded guilty, Thursday.Muhammad had robbed Zuvyagina Lidia of her handbag at 6pm on July 5 this year by the roadside near Zara's Hotel building along Jalan Coastal Harbour City, here.

The offence under Section 392 of the Penal Code carries a jail term of up to 14 years, and whipping, on conviction.The court ordered Muhammad to serve the jail sentence from the date of his arrest on July 5.In mitigation, Muhammad who was not represented, asked for a lenient sentence by saying that he has two children and siblings to look after.He also told the court that it was his first offence.

However, Deputy Public Prosecutor Rustam Sanip urged the court to impose a deterrent sentence considering the public interest, seriousness and rampancy of the case.He submitted that the victim was a tourist and she might think that the country is not safe to visit.

The court heard that while Zuvyagina and her mother were walking towards Imago Shopping Mall, an unknown man approached her from behind, grabbed her handbag and ran away.Zuvyagina shouted for help and the public who saw the incident then chased the man, later identified as Muhammad.Stay up-to-date by following Daily Express’s Telegram channel.
