1B: SESB urged to reduce first payment

Kota Kinabalu: State Trade and Industrial Assistant Minister Azhar Matussin has pleaded, on behalf of 1Borneo Hypermall tenants, to Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd (SESB) to reduce the first payment of instalments from RM5 million to RM3 million.He said the tenants implored for help, fearing that their businesses would suffer due to the power supply cut, prompting him to seek discussions with SESB."Negotiations with SESB are not on the total outstanding amount but the first instalment payment for arrears," he said, in a statement, Friday.

Azhar, who is also Karambunai Assemblyman, said SESB has yet to agree to it."Should SESB agree, its means that the power utility company will reconnect power supply to the air-conditioners in the shopping mall once the first payment is made," he said. Meanwhile, SESB General Manager (Corporate Communications) Chendramata Sinteh said a total of 448 tenants who are registered with 1BMC, the independent power distributor at the mall, were affected by the power cut.However, she said only the air-conditioners were not functioning whereas lights, escalators and elevators in the common area were still functioning for the benefit of the people visiting the mall.

She also said there are 934 users registered with SESB, comprising condominium residents, USIA, hotels and female dormitory for Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) which will continue to have uninterrupted electricity supply.On July 11, electricity supply to the mall was disconnected by SESB when the 1Borneo Hypermall management failed to settle arrears amounting to RM8.7 million.
