Kota Kinabalu: Datuk Madius Tangau should make a bold, no holds-barred call to the Federal Government to immediately fulfil all the promises made in the Malaysia Agreement. Parti Solidariti Tanahairku (Star), President Datuk Dr. Jeffrey Kitingan made this challenge in response to Tangau's view that Tan Sri Richard Malanjum's appointment to the post of chief justice was a partial fulfilment of M63.

"Tangau shouldn't use a far-fetched interpretation in an effort to condescend to and placate Sabahans' unhappiness about such a monumental document as the MA63," Dr Jeffrey said.

"If he is really a leader fighting for Sabah rights he shouldn't just be trying to ingratiate himself to the federal leadership using the MA63 but should be reminding the federal cabinet how much Sabah has suffered and lost tremendously from the denial of the many promises since the formation of the federation."

Dr Jeffrey, who is Tambunan Assemblyman and MP for Keningau, stressed that Malanjum was appointed to his post due to his ample qualifications and experience, and all Sabahan's are truly proud of the historic appointment.

"We hope that this step in the right direction will bring the federation closer together by giving the peoples of the Borneo a stronger sense of belonging to the federation.

"It's high time that we get rid of the 55-year old feeling that Malaysia is actually Malaya which is the new colonial master," Dr Jeffrey said. "With Malaysia we never had a new constitution; hence there was no real new nation or federation. It was merely a simple co-opting Sabah and Sarawak to take them over as colonies from the British masters.

"Just imagine, the prime minister, deputy prime minister, and senior ministers were then all Malayan appointees, including the military and until recently, the chief justice as well," he added.

"There was a presumptuous attitude of blatantly taking us for granted, and our leaders were too timid and fearful to speak up. And such attitude still continues with leaders like Tangau even today, half a century later."

Dr Jeffrey reminded Sabah leaders that with the second coming of Tun Mahathir as prime minister, there is now the blessing of a new political climate which is more conciliatory and open, hence having created a golden opportunity to create a new Malaysia which will be more in line with what was promised in 1963.

"It's also time for a new Constitution of Malaysia, and to do away with the Malaya-centric 'Federal Constitution'," Dr. Jeffrey stressed.

"The new constitution should be designed to create a new Malaysian federation which will cement the equal-partner status of the component nations of Sabah, Sarawak and Malaya."
