Filipino gets 11 years, rotan for robbing outlet

Kota Kinabalu: A 23-year-old Filipino was jailed 11 years and ordered to get two strokes of the cane for robbing a worker of a 24-hour outlet.Rosly Abaha pleaded guilty before Sessions Court Judge Azreena Aziz to robbing the 19-year-old worker with a knife.The offence took place at 4.49am on June 24 this year at the Kedai Orange at Oceanus Waterfront, here.

Rosly made off RM1,330.25 belonging to the outlet.The offence under Section 392/397 of the Penal Code carries a jail term of up to 20 years, and whipping, on conviction.Azreena ordered Rosly to serve the jail sentence consecutively with the eight-year jail sentence he is currently serving.After serving the jail sentence, the court ordered Rosly referred to the Immigration Department.

During mitigation, Rosly who was not represented, asked for the sentence to be run concurrently. He told the court that he has two children to look after.

However, Deputy Public Prosecutor Husna Abdul Halim urged the court to impose a heavy sentence on the grounds that Rosly had committed a serious offence.She said Rosly also caused fear and trauma to the victim and that the offence was rampant nowadays. The court heard that while the victim was working at the outlet, an unknown man entered and pretended to buy a pack of candy.The man, later identified as Rosly, then went to the counter to pay for the candy but took out a knife and pointed it at the victim.Rosly then ordered the victim to surrender all the money inside the cash register.Stay up-to-date by following Daily Express’s Telegram channel.
