Kota Kinabalu: The Rhinos are closing in on the Malaysia Cup competition after their 2-1 Premier League win over Terengganu II at Stadium Sultan Ismail Nasiruddin Shah, Friday night. In an entertaining match, Sabah managed to find the net first but Musa Maxsius's effort in the 15th minute was ruled offside while Sabah custodian Rozaimie Rohim made two crucial saves to deny the home side before Hector Ramos headed in the opener from a cross by Sabri Sahar one minute after the restart.

Rodoljub Paunovic then opened his account in his second spell with the team with a well-struck goal in the 89th minute before a late consolation for the home side deep into injury time.

Head coach Jelius Ating is keeping his fingers crossed as he aims to bring the team to its first Malaysia Cup competition since 2011.

"It has been rather a long time since we last appeared in the competition. I do not want to miss the opportunity as we have a great chance to finish in the top four this season," he said, Saturday.

With three more matches to go, Sabah are in fourth place at the moment with 24 points, one point behind PDRM in third and Felcra FC are in second with 31 points while Felda United are at the top with 38 points.

In the match on Friday night, the coach praised his all local midfield foursome of Maxsius Musa, Mohd Azzizan Nordin, Sabri Sahar and Hamran Peter.

"They played exceptionally well in midfield to curb the opposite's movements and deliveries.

It was a very balanced game and with their contributions, we were able to make the breakthrough at the start of the second half and extended our lead late in the match." - GL Oh
