Kota Kinabalu: The State Government has reactivated the special committee to eradicate illegal logging in Sabah, Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal said, Monday.Shafie said the move would empower implementation and law enforcement to protect forest resources in the State from any forms of exploitation.

The committee is placed under the Chief Minister's Department in line with the provisions of the Forestry Enactment 1968. "The new State Government has voiced out concerns on forestry issues, including illegal logging.

"This doesn't mean that illegal logging activities are still rampant in Sabah at the moment.

"What it actually refers to is the concern of the state government over illegal logging, leakages and other forestry related crimes which are still happening," he said.

He added that the issues are also of public concern as the state's forests are important not only in terms of revenue and job opportunities, but also for wildlife.

"So, it's important for the state government to act proactively," he said.
