Tawau: State Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Christina Liew said a professional tourism architect will be hired to develop a conceptual plan for Tawau Hills Park (Taman Bukit Tawau) in order to turn it into a first class tourism resort in Tawau.Christina, who is also Tawau Member of Parliament-cum-Api-Api Assemblywoman, said Taman Bukit Tawau has a wide area with 2,700 hectares with lots of potential such as waterfall, hot spring, the tallest tropical tree and beautiful rivers.

She told the media this after a working visit to the tourism hotspot with her permanent secretary and officers.

Also present was her communication officer in chief, Fung Thien Yein.

Her ministry will start to get the papers of the development plan done. In the meantime, Christina would ensure Taman Bukit Tawau is included in the Matta (Malaysian Association of Tour and Travel Agents) tourism package.

According to her, Taman Bukit Tawau is a potential tourism hotspot which has attracted her while visiting the place. She felt satisfied with the visit which has given her ideas on the way to develop the place.

More hostels will be proposed in the plan.

Meanwhile, a Park spokesperson said Sabah Parks commissioned a management plan study for Tawau Hills Park in 2015, conducted by the Institute for Development Studies (IDS) Sabah.

The management plan will be re-evaluated this year to implement some of the medium-term development plans. - Christy Chok
