30 for Sabah cheongsam contest
Kota Kinabalu: About 30 participants will take part in the inaugural Sabah International Qipao Pageant to be held at the Hakka Hall, here, on Aug 10.Sabah World Qipao Association president Queenie Siak said most of the participants will be from the peninsula, Sarawak and Taiwan, apart from Sabah.

"The competitions aim to promote qipao, also known as cheongsam to the public, especially the Chinese community in Sabah," she told a press conference, Wednesday.

"Even though the pageant requires participants to wear qipao it is open to all races and not limited to Chinese only."

The Sabah International Qipao Pageant is divided into two categories – from 17-40 and above 40.

Five contestants each will then be selected from both categories to enter the Universal Queen of the Year pageant.

She said contestants are given the freedom to showcase any design of qipao – be it traditional or contemporary, as long as the collar design of the dresses are maintained.

"What is important is the pageant can be a platform to pass down the tradition of wearing qipao to the young generation, especially youths in Sabah," she said.

In conjunction with the pageant, a special parade will be held by the participants in their elegant qipaos, from the city's landmark 'I Love KK' at Segama Waterfront to Suria Sabah, starting 5pm, on Aug 9.

"The public are also welcomed to take part in the parade where they, too, can wear their qipaos and walked together with the participants.

"The parade will be followed by a talent show by the contestants at Suria Sabah."

The winners for the pageant will receive RM35,000 worth of total prizes and Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Mohamaddin Ketapi is scheduled to attend the crowning night.

Winners of the Sabah International Qipao pageant will participate in the global competition to be held in China in November, while the winners for the Sabah Universal Queen of the Year will compete in Kuala Lumpur, in September.

Siak hoped the public will support the inaugural event which will be another addition to exciting happenings in the State's tourism calendar. - Ricardo Unto
