Stealing smartphones at KKIA cargo area: Man fined

Kota Kinabalu: A 22-year-old local was fined RM5,000 or 16 months' jail for stealing four smartphones two months ago.Mohd Sharan Iqmal Muammar Ghadafi pleaded guilty before Magistrate Cindy Mc Juce Balitus to committing the offence at 11am on May 5 at the cargo area in Kota Kinabalu International Airport (KKIA), here, along with three men.

He was jointly charged with three other accused – Haimie Jamsani, Mohd Sobree Matdin and Mohd Shafiee Buding to committing the crime framed under Section 379 of the Penal Code.

Haimie, 32, Sobree, 28, and Shafiee, 27, maintained their innocence and would go on trial on Aug 28.

Mohd Sharan requested to be fined on the grounds that the smartphones had been returned and that he would work in government sector soon.

Inspector Albert Basiri, prosecuting, applied for an appropriate sentence to be imposed as a lesson to Mohd Sharan and other would be offenders.

Meanwhile, the court fixed Aug 29 for the trial of two men charged with disposing of two stolen smartphones.

Cindy set the date for Mohd Aqmarl Ahmad, 23, and Mohd Fauzi Aziz, 24, during mention of their case on Thursday.

The accused denied committing the offence at 8am on May 21 at the cargo area also in the KKIA.

Mohd Aqmarl and Mofh Fauzi were represented by counsel Farazwin Haxdy and Shahlan Jufri, respectively.

Meanwhile, the case of a 27-year-old man who tried to stab his 73-year-old father with a knife, will be mentioned on July 20, as the father informed the court that he wanted to withdraw the case.

The court set the date for Ghulam Hassan Alih for the father to tender a police report withdrawing the previous report he lodged against Ghulam.

Ghulam is accused of committing the offence to one Alih Karma at 11pm on May 7 at a house in Kg Lok Urai, Gaya island.

Alih informed the court Thursday that he wished to withdraw the case as he was tired of coming to the city for the case due to his age.

The court advised him to lodge a police report first.

Ghulam is currently serving 12 months' jail for causing hurt to Alih by hitting him with a plank.

In the same court, a Filipino Mohd Rasin Habib, 32, was jailed eight months for having 0.06gm of syabu.

Rasin, who admitted to having the drugs at Sinsuran area on May 26, was also ordered be referred to the Immigration Department after serving his sentence. - Jo Ann Mool
