900 take part in varsity league

Kota Kinabalu: Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) Staff League 2018 kicked off with some 900 university staff members participating at the UMS Sports Complex, here, Friday.The league will last for two months from July 20 to September 20 with 17 teams participating in eight different sports events which futsal, volleyball, sepak takraw, tennis, ping pong, darts, chess, and Amazing Race.

This year's league is a slight change in format compared to the previous one with a selection of more popular and sports programmes to encourage the participants to be more involved in the event.

UMS Vice-Chancellor Prof Datuk Dr D. Kamarudin D Mudin said that the participation by the staff members will encourage interaction with one another as well as strengthening the bonds of new or existing relationships.

"Partaking in sports activities consistently will produce huge positive impacts as health and fitness can reward an individual high productivity as well as gaining stronger confidence.

"Despite facing a tight financial constraint, I believe that organising such sports programme are equally important as well as life is not only about academic," he said this represented by Deputy Vice-chancellor (Student welfare) Prof Dr Ismail Ali, on Friday.

Meanwhile, Kamarudin informed that the UMS Management team is considering in hosting the 44th Malaysian Public University Staff League on 2020.

He added that a Staff Recreational and Sports Club will be established to play an important role in holding future sports and recreational activities and programmes.

He encouraged the staff to possess an active lifestyle to be able to concentrate properly and stress-free on their daily lives. – AFP
