Labuan: Some 25 yachts carrying 55 international sailors stopped by the duty-free island for the annual "Sail Malaysia Passage To East 2018 Yacht Rally" programme from July 16 to 19 (Thursday). The fleet comprised sailors from Australia, Netherlands, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, France and America, who all made Labuan their four-day stop after Brunei and will be heading to Kota Kinabalu and Tawau from here.

Programme organiser Sazli Kamal Basha said the programme was well received and is said to be an imperative platform that can introduce Malaysia as a voyage destination capable of attracting sailors from around the world.

"It is definite that Labuan has been chosen as one of their stops as the island has a splendid marina and the facilities for their yachts.

"These sailors embarked on their voyage in Malaysia via Langkawi first and then to several places in the peninsula before making their way to the Bornean region," Sazli told reporters at a dinner with the sailors.

This year marked the third time these sailors made Labuan a stop in their journey, he cited.

Meanwhile, Labuan Corporation Tourism Department Director Mahathir Abdul Hamid hoped such programmes would promote the island as an ideal tourist destination and stopover for yachts and sailors worldwide.

"All 55 sailors were brought to visit our many attractions during their stay here, including the War Memorial Park, Peace Par, Japanese Surrender Point and the Labuan International Golf Club.

"The fleet was also brought to visit the small industries we have here, including those which process seafood products such as tuna sate and keropok lekor.

"Overall the feedback we received from this group, most of whom are visiting Labuan for the first time, is ver positive and they are planning to drop by again soon," said Mahathir.

He added that LC will continue to provide support for such programmes and will positively take in any feedback which could improve the services in the island, particularly to provide a better experience for sailors. - Iffah Dilaney
