Najib denies summoning NSC meet May 9

Kuala Lumpur: Former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak on Thursday denied having summoned a special meeting of the National Security Council on May 9 following the defeat of the Barisan Nasional in the 14th general election that day.Najib, who is the MP for Pekan, said he did not harbour any intention to trigger chaos in the country on that night."There have been accusations and slander that I, as the Prime Minister at that time, had intended to spark chaos and declare an emergency for fear of losing power.

"The accusations are totally baseless. I can tell this august House that the National Security Council was not summoned to convene on that May 9. This can be verified by referring to the then Chief of Defence Forces, Inspector-General of Police and all members of the council," he said when speaking during the debate on the motion of thanks for the royal address by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Sultan Muhammad V.

Najib said the transition of power was peaceful and orderly.

"I want to state that I believe in the principles of democracy and the rule of law and I adhere to these," he said.

In his speech of almost 20 minutes duration, Najib told the House that the government of today had inherited a strong and healthy economy from the BN.

He said the previous (BN) government had implemented various measures, including two economic stimulus packages and a policy of economic transformation, that had steered Malaysia out of the effects of the global economic crisis that had taken place during his leadership.

"As a result of the transformation policy and good economic administration in facing the crisis, it is needless for Malaysia to establish a wealth fund, capital fund or even 'tabung harapan' (fund of hope) to save the national economy," he said.

Najib said the policy of the government of today seemed to go back to the past, with the return to subsidies and the sales and service tax (SST).

He claimed that civil servants in the M40 group complained about the cancellation by the new government of his pledge to give a special annual increment of RM270 to them due to the populist measure of abolishing the goods and services tax (GST).

Although the abolition of the GST had stabilised prices, another round of price hikes was expected to occur when the SST was implemented on Sept 1, he said.
