Peninsula teachers not keen on Sabah

Kuala Lumpur: The number of teachers seeking a transfer is seriously lop-sided for Johor, Sarawak and Sabah: teachers wanting to be transferred out are four to six times more than those applying to teach in the three states.The reverse is true for Kelantan, Terengganu and Kedah, which saw a total of more than 11,000 teachers applying for a transfer to these states, Sin Chew Daily reported. Education Ministry statistics showed that up to June, a total of 4,096 primary and secondary school teachers have applied to be transferred out of Johor but only 698 teachers are seeking to be transferred to the state.ADVERTISEMENT Teachers seeking to get out of Sarawak outnumber those wanting to get into the state 3,461 to 410.The situation in Sabah is similar, with 2,090 seeking to leave the state and only 388 seeking a transfer there.Kelantan has turned out to be the state with the biggest number of teachers seeking a transfer to, at 5,296, and only 102 applying to be transferred out.Terengganu came in second with 3,294 teachers seeking a transfer to the state and just 353 in the state wishing to teach elsewhere.ADVERTISEMENT Meanwhile, 2,715 teachers have applied to be transferred to Kedah compared with just 329 seeking to be transferred out of the state. It can be seen that not only are teachers trying to shun big cities due to the higher cost of living and the relatively greater pressure as a result of the more hectic urban lifestyle, they are also avoiding the two east Malaysian states.

Deputy Education Minister Teo Nie Ching said for the first six months of this year, the ministry has approved 12,755 applications for transfer, out of a total of 18,652 applications.
