Kota Kinabalu: A 53-year-old vegetable seller who fed her dog 32 sewing needles as revenge biting her two children was jailed a day and fined RM7,000 or spend another a week in prison. Latifah @ Hilda Dusin became the second person in the State to be hauled to court for committing cruelty against animals under Section 18(1)(e) of the Animal Welfare Enactment 2015 since it was passed. The first case was in Lahad Datu which also involved a dog. Latifah pleaded guilty before Sessions Court Judge Ainul Shahrin Mohamad, Friday. She had caused unnecessary pain and suffering to the male local breed dog between 2pm and 8.30pm on Jan 19, 2017 at a house in Taman Pantai Lok Kawi Sabindo, Kinarut, Papar.ADVERTISEMENT Under the Section, it provides a jail term of up to three years, or a fine of up to RM100,000, or both, on conviction.Ainul ordered the ownership of the dog to be forfeited and placed under the care of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA).During mitigation, Latifah who is a single mother of three children, asked for no custodial sentence as no one would take care of her children if she was sent to prison. She told the court that she committed the offence because she wanted to protect her children who were earlier bitten by the dog.ADVERTISEMENT However, Prosecuting Officer Dr Zul Bahar Abdul Rashid from the Veterinary Service Department requested for an appropriate sentence and also told the court that the dog is still alive and currently under the care of SPCA.The court heard that on January 19 last year, a member of SPCA received a complaint from one Melisa Chin, the eldest daughter of Latifah, claiming that her mother (Latifah) had fed the dog with a piece of bread filled with the sewing needles.
