Ipoh: The Majlis Amanah Rakyat (Mara) management has been given seven days to terminate the contract of the food operator at the Mara Junior Science College (MRSM) in Taiping, where two incidents of food poisoning were reported last month. State committee chairman on Health, Consumer Affairs, National Integration and Human Resource, A. Sivanesan said that the contract, which expired on July 31, must not be renewed.

The recent episodes of food poisoning at MRSM Taiping was due to the food prepared by the contractor on July 12 and July 31, he told a press conference at the Perak Darul Ridzuan Building here Friday.

"If Mara does not appoint a new food contractor in seven days, then we (the State Health Department) will not be responsible, Mara must be held accountable for its actions Commenting further, Sivanesan said that he visited MRSM Taiping yesterday and was informed that there was no provision in the contract allowing Mara to terminate the food operator.

"As the state executive councillor in charge of health, I want to have a look at the contract.

If this is true, it is a 'lopsided' contract that only benefits one party," he said.

Sivanesan said that the State Health Department would resort to court action on both the food poisoning episodes.

In the first incident, the results of the laboratory test for 17 out of 33 food samples were tested positive for a variety of pathogenic microorganisms and bacteria.

As for the second case, while further tests were being carried out, preliminary findings indicate that the source could be the 'mee rojak' that the students consumed. – Bernama
