11 squatter houses in Keningau razed
Keningau: Some 172 people who lost their homes in a fire at Kampung Belaginggi Lingkudau Tengah, here, Saturday night are being registered by the Welfare Department to enable them to receive aid from the Government. District Officer Yusop Osman said reports would be sent to the State Natural Disaster Committee to ensure that the standardised distribution of aid could be discussed together with other districts facing similar problem.

"All parties ought to register to receive government assistance such as food and other necessities," he said after visiting the fire victims together with members the District Disaster Committee, Sunday.

Yusop, who is also the Chairman of the District Natural Disaster Committee, urged the victims to stay calm and patient before aid arrives.

In the 7.30pm fire, a total of 11 squatter houses were destroyed.

The Keningau Fire and Rescue Department received a distress call at 7.31pm through the MER999 Fire and Rescue Station (BBP) here and a total of 24 personnel, including officials, with two engines, an EMRS and two utility vehicles, rushed to the scene and arrived at 7.36pm.

The fire was successfully put out completely at 10.24pm.

No casualties were reported and the cause of the fire and loss are under investigation. - Johan Aziz
