Successful plea for a retrial

Kota Kinabalu: The success of Sabahan drug mule "Rebecca's" (not her real name) appeal to the Tokyo High Court after the trial at the Chiba District Court in May this year has raised the family's hope of her release from jail.She was sentenced to eight years and six months' imprisonment and fined three million yen (or in default an additional 200 days in jail)."My sister's plea for a retrial received a favourable response on July 12. She has since been moved from the Chiba Prison to the Prison in Tokyo pending the retrial," a sibling told Daily Express.

According to her, Rebecca requires new, detailed evidence to support her retrial, as advised by the Japanese lawyer handling the case.In this regard, the sibling said the two Sabahan lawyers engaged by the family earlier to gather evidence and assist the relevant authority to secure Rebecca's release have continued to extend help in collecting the necessary evidence."It was a case of misunderstanding. Through their arrangement, we (family) were also able to meet with the relevant authorities in Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya. We appreciate their contribution this time around," she added.The sibling said they are planning their third trip to Japan to meet with the Japanese lawyer and to visit Rebecca.

The family also made a vote of special thanks to senior lawyer Mary Florence Gomez and lawyers Victoria Chee and Leeanne Kok as well as a Samaritan named Terence Tulus for special assistance rendered to them. Another lawyer, who also assisted, declined to be named.
