Keningau: The Warisan-led State Government should cancel the appointment of Amarjit Singh as the new Director of the Sabah Water Department, said Parti Bersatu Rakyat Sabah (PBRS) President Tan Sri Joseph Kurup. "It is highly irregular to appoint Amarjit to that important position," he said, in a statement, Tuesday.

He said Amarjit was being investigated by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) in connection with the Water Department scandal.

"The investigation should proceed and Amarjit must clear his name before being considered for the post.

This should also apply to others who are being investigated by the MACC," said Kurup, adding that appointing Amarjit "was a clear attempt to cover the alleged act of corruption."

On Monday, Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) acting President Datuk Seri Dr Maximus Ongkili, when commenting on the appontment of Amarjit, called on Warisan to honour its election manifesto, particularly on Borneonisation.

"Do not destroy the Sabah civil service purely for political expediency and cronyism goals," Ongkili was quoted as telling Chief Minister Datuk Seri Shafie Apdal and Infrastructure Development Minister Datuk Peter Anthony in reports published Tuesday.

"It shows the extent to which the Warisan-led State Government can go in appointing party members and cronies to destroy the basic fabric of the Sabah civil service.

"This is against the Borneonisation safeguard entrenched in the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) which provides the fundamental guarantee of senior officers in the civil service.

"Is there a shortage of senior qualified, technically trained officers in the Water Department and Public Works Department ? Why bring an ordinary officer from outside the civil service to displace senior members of technical civil service?" Ongkili asked.
