Sabah Art Gallery hopes to set up branch in Tawau
Published on: Saturday, August 11, 2018

Tawau: A Sabah Art Gallery (SAG) branch can be established in Tawau if there are more artists in the district who show interest and strength, said its Director Jennifer Linggi.

She said her department is ready to assist in setting up such a gallery considering that there is no such venue in the district at present to cater for artists.

She said artworks by Tawau artists have shown great improvement over the years and are even on par with those in the State capital.

"If Tawau continues to show performance and strength, we hope a gallery can be established as there is no Sabah Art Gallery branch here and in Sandakan. We are willing to help," she said after presenting prizes to the winners of the Annual Sabah Artwork Choice for the Tawau division, here.

The ceremony was officiated by Tawau Municipal Council (MPT) Deputy President Aftar Nurajat, who represented its President Aljius Sipil.

Jennifer said the event this year saw an increase in the number of participants to 73 for the three categories and a significant improvement in the quality of artworks.

According to her, the programme has been held in Sandakan, Kuala Penyu and Tawau and will continue to be held in Tenom, Kota Belud and Kota Kinabalu.

Jennifer encouraged artists to be more critical in producing future artworks by not only focusing on painting but also embracing the message and symbolic elements that can raise questions and answers to make it more interesting, as well as in line with the programme's goal to increase quality collection.

"100 years from now, our artworks will be seen by our next generation and they will see how our society now thinks," she said. - Lagatah Toyos
