Fish bomb goes off killing man

Keningau: A local died while his friend was seriously injured after a suspected fish bomb exploded at Kampung Lotong, Tambunan, on Saturday.Acting District Police Chief ASP Lee Nyuk Kim said Bernardine Francis, 40, from Kampung Moloson, Tambunan, was pronounced dead at the scene by Tambunan Hospital staff.

He said the deceased's friend, a 32-year-old from Kampung Bundu, Tambunan, was hospitalised due to serious injuries on his left and right hand, broken legs and an injured mouth.

"Initial police investigation revealed that the incident occurred around 7.30pm at an unnumbered house at Kampung Lotong, Tambunan.

"A five-member team from Tambunan and Keningau police stations went to the scene upon being alerted at 8.17pm," he said.

He said the victim's wife, 23, was sleeping with her child by her side when she heard a loud explosion behind the house.

"She rushed to the back of the house and found her husband and his friend lying in a pool of blood, with wounds on her husband's chest, thighs and neck.

"According to the wife, she has never seen her husband create the suspected fish bomb before," he said.

Lee said there were no criminal elements found at the scene and investigations are ongoing.
