Filipino gets 9 years, rotan for trying to rape woman

Kota Kinabalu: A 44-year-old Filipino was jailed nine years and ordered to be given a stroke of the cane for attempting to rape a 40-year-old local woman.Sulaiman Ismail pleaded guilty before Sessions Court Judge Ainul Shahrin Mohamad to trying to rape the woman at 2.30am on Aug 7 this year at a house in Jalan Nountun, Inanam.The offence under Section 376(1)/511 of the Penal Code carries a jail term of up to 10 years, and whipping, on conviction.

In his mitigation, Sulaiman who was not represented, asked for leniency.But, Deputy Public Prosecutor Rustam Sanip urged the court to impose a deterrent sentence as such cases was rampant nowadays.The court heard that while the victim was sleeping alone at the house as her husband was out to take water nearby, Sulaiman came and tried to take off her pants.She shouted but Sulaiman hugged her and covered her mouth with his hands.

The victim kicked Sulaiman's legs as well as scream continuously, causing Sulaiman to leave.After the woman's husband arrived home, she revealed the incident and lodged a police report against Sulaiman.
