Another jumbo death and injury in Sandakan

Kota Kinabalu: The carcass of an elephant calf was found floating in the Kinabatangan River in Sandakan and a bull elephant was found injured in Lahad Datu yesterday, according to the Sabah Wildlife Department.Its Director, Augustine Tuuga, said the carcass of the calf, believed to be about two years old, was spotted by tourists on a boat ride and had been secured by the bank of the river."A team was sent to conduct a post-mortem to determine the cause of death and a preliminary check found no visible physical injuries," he said.

Augustine said the bull elephant had injured a front leg after it got caught in a snare near Taliwas, Lahad Datu.He said the information was received late in the evening and the department veterinary team was not able to make it there last night.
