Applicants must fill out form

Kota Kinabalu: All permanent residents aged 60 and above who had applied for a citizenship status have to wait for approval from the Ministry of Home Affairs, said Likas Assemblyman Tan Lee Fatt. He made the call to the Ministry of Home Affairs, recently, while responding to a number of enquiries as a result of his office being flooded with enquiries from people in the area who wanted to know the progress and certainty in relation to the following matters.Tan said applicants who have yet to apply may obtain application forms at any National Registration Department (NRD) offices as he has received clarification from NRD Sabah Director Datuk Ismail Ahmad.

He was referring to the statement by Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad on Tuesday that permanent resident cardholders' i.e. red card holders above the age of 60 years qualify for citizenship. Stay up-to-date by following Daily Express’s Telegram channel.

However, he said several conditions may apply. Tan said these conditions are that the applicant must be born in Malaysia, a child from a parent who is a Malaysian, have resided in Malaysia in the past 10 years in the 12-year period preceding to the date of application and can speak fluently in Bahasa Malaysia as well as passing Bahasa Malaysia test.
