A two-horse race for Safa hotseat

Kota Kinabalu: It will be a two-horse race between Datuk Yusoff Kasim and Alijus Sipil for the Sabah Football Association presidency in the coming annual congress on August 25 at the Likas Square Apartments here.With Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal, who was among five names earlier nominated by the state district FAs, confirming his intention not to contest and so did his younger brother Hamid Apdal and former Rhinos chief executive officer Tan Sri T C Goh, it is ultimately down to former vice president Yusoff and former secretary general Alijus going head to head for the top post.

The announcement made on Thursday by Yusoff who was still then acting president also informed that four candidates will vie for the two deputy president posts, eight for the vice president and nine for the two available executive committee seats.

Hamid, who declined to run for the president post, has opted for the deputy post together with former international Datuk James Wong, ex-Rhinos team manager Dato Abdul Rahman Zakaria and Fredoline Penggo.

The candidates for the vice president posts are current Rhinos team manager Datuk Juil Nuatim, Azmeer Shamsuddin, Salahuddin @ Salehudin Anoi, Husin Rahim, ex-international Matlan Marjan, Mohd Ismail Hj Ayub, Reggie Sua @ Hafeez and Yahya Kasim while the names of the nine hoping to be in the executive committee are Redzuan Ismail, Rafie Robert, Mohd Noh Mohd Adzlie, Pepe Antahar, Harun Durabi, Fadli Juanas, Datuk Razak Sulaiman, Jackson Taguah and Noorzain Tawi.

According to Yusoff, all 26 districts FAs who are allowed to have two representatives for the congress are expected to attend to cast their votes on the day.

He also said those who may have a change of representatives will need a written letter confirmed by their respective presidents.

Meanwhile, the annual congress to be held was advised by Sabah Sports Commissioner after the state footballing body was left with no president following the resignation of Tan Sri Musa Aman in May.

Long time deputy president Datuk Lawrence Gimbang also quit his post weeks later together with vice president Datuk Harun Ismail while the other deputy president post was left vacant with the passing of former Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Tawfiq Abu Bakar Titingan.

The two vice president posts were left vacant following Yusoff's intention to contest for the top job and the earlier resignation of Harun while the executive posts were made available by Juil and Rahman. - GL Oh
