Malaysia stun S Korea 2-1

JAKARTA: The Malaysian Under-23 squad pulled off an upset win against Asian giants South Korea at the 2018 Asian Games on Friday.Datuk Ong Kim Swee's boys stunned the reigning Asian Games champions 2-1 in their second Group E match with both goals scored by Mohd Safawi Rasid in the 5th and 45th minutes.

Hwang Ui-jo reduced the deficit in the 88th minute but Malaysia hung on for a precious three points.

The result ensured Malaysia maintained their perfect start after having earlier beaten Kyrgyz Republic 3-1 in their opening group match on Wednesday.

With two victories under their belt, the national squad have a great chance of advancing to the last 16 and will next take on Bahrain in their final group match on Monday.

For four-time winners South Korea, Friday's outcome was unexpected as they came into the match having thrashed Bahrain 6-0 in their opening game and boasted a line-up featuring Tottenham Hotspur striker Son Hyeung-min who had been rested against Bahrain.

The South Koreans will next face the Kyrgyz Republic.
