Labuan school ready for UEC

Labuan: Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan Chung Hwa Primary School Chairman Datuk Robert Seah Kiat Chong said it is timely for the school to have a new RM3 million multi-purpose hall with the possible recognition of the Unified Examination Certificate (UEC).He said when UEC recognition by the government becomes a reality, "we would have prepared in advance to handle the expected increase in the school's enrolment." "I must thank the Board of Director members and others who supported the school to undertake the challenging project."ADVERTISEMENT To make the official opening of the hall on October 7 historic, the Board had invited Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, Education Minister Maszlee Malik as well the Federal Territories Minister Khalid Samad and others.He noted that for the final phase of the hall which includes furniture and fittings, the estimated cost was RM800,000 and he hoped that there would be continued support.Robert said this after handing an official invitation to the Chairman of the Labuan Chinese Chamber of Commerce Datuk Wing Kii Yii to request for financial aid for the last instalment of the project.The 1942-established Chung Hwa school has 500 students which about 65 per cent are non-Chinese. It was in Pakatan Harapan's PRU 14 manifesto to recognise UEC. The new government has indicated that this may take five years as it had to be fine-tuned and fitted into the existing National Education Policy.

UEC is currently recognised by local private higher institutions and many universities overseas such as Oxford, Cambridge, Australian National University, Kyoto University, California Institute of Technology and Peking University. - Sohan Das
